What is Salbutamol?
Salbutamol is the common blue reliever inhaler used by asthma sufferers. The better known branded version of the drug is called Ventolin. It contains 100ug of Salbutamol, a quick-acting drug that helps stops an asthma attack when it occurs. You can order Salbutamol inhalers from our UK registered online doctor for delivery, without having to see a doctor face to face.
How does it work?
Salbutamol works by acting on beta-2 receptors in the lungs. When Salbutamol stimulates these receptors it causes the muscles in the airways to relax, and this allows airways to open. You should start feeling your symptoms ease straight after you used the medication. Other reliever inhalers such as Ventolin and Salamol Easi-Breathe and reliever/preventer inhalers such as Seretide and Symbicort are available.
How to use Salbutamol
Depending on the inhaler you have, techniques on use will differ. You can read about different inhaler techniques in our blog post addressing each type of inhaler. Salbutamol is generally used when required up to four times daily. 1-2 puffs should be used depending on your requirements.
For the standard aerosol inhaler the following steps should be followed.
- Open the inhaler, remove the mouthpiece cover-check there is no object in the mouthpiece.
- Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and your finger on the top of the canister and shake the inhaler up and down 4 or 5 times.
- Breathe out as far as is comfortable, away from the MDI. Do not breathe out into the inhaler.
- Put the mouthpiece to your lips. Seal your lips around the mouthpiece.
- Start to breathe in slowly and gently. As you begin to breathe in, press the top of the canister down fully to release one dose. Continue breathing in slowly and steadily and as deeply as you can until your lungs are full.
- Remove the device from your mouth and hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds and then breathe out slowly.
- Continue to breathe normally.
Asthma is a common condition which affects the body’s respiratory system. It is caused by inflammation in the lungs, and in particular, it’s smaller airways (known as bronchioles) and air sacs ( known as alveoli).
There are currently 5.4 million people in the UK receiving asthma treatment, and it is a long-term condition. However, symptoms can worsen or improve over time, and its severity can often depend on a number of external factors.
