What is Dalacin cream?
Dalacin cream is a prescription only vaginal cream used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV). The active ingredient is clindamycin phosphate. Clindamycin is an antibiotic, which works to kill off the bacteria which causes this infection.
How does Dalacin cream work?
BV is caused by changes in the natural balance of the bacteria in the vagina. This creates an overgrowth of certain bacteria (like Gardnerella vaginalis) which can lead to symptoms of BV.
The antibiotic in Dalacin cream works by stopping this overgrowth of bacteria. This helps the body to restore the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina and stop the symptoms of BV.
Half of women with BV will not have any symptoms. The most common symptom is an unusual vaginal discharge that has a strong fishy smell, most often after sexual intercourse. The discharge may be white or grey and thin and watery. Soreness and itching symptoms are not usually associated with BV.
Dalacin cream only treats BV and is not effective against other infections of the vagina like other bacterial infections, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or vaginal thrush.
How to use Dalacin cream
The cream comes with an applicator. The dose is one applicator full (about 5grams of cream). This dose should be inserted into the vagina using the applicator.
The patient information leaflet contains the following information:
- Remove the cap from the tube.
- Screw a disposable applicator onto the tube where the cap has been removed.
- Holding the tube from the bottom, squeeze gently and force the cream into the applicator. The applicator is full when the plunger does not move further.
- Unscrew the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.
- Lie on your back, hold the applicator firmly, and insert gently into the vagina as far as possible without causing discomfort. Still holding the barrel, slowly push the plunger until it stops and all the cream has been expelled.
The applicator should be disposed of in a general waste bin rather than a toilet.
Alternatives to Dalacin cream
There are two antibiotics used to treat BV:
- Clindamycin (Dalacin cream)
- Metronidazole (Zidoval gel)
The course of treatment for Dalacin cream is once daily for 7 days.
The course of treatment for Zidoval gel is once daily for 5 days.
Both antibiotics are also available as tablets or capsules to be taken by mouth. Our doctors are only able to prescribe the cream or gel.
What is Dalacin cream used for?
It is used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV).
How long does Dalacin cream take to work?
The cream should be applied at bedtime for 7 days. Symptoms may improve or disappear sooner but it should still be used for the full 7 days.
Can Dalacin cream be used for thrush?
The active ingredient is an antibiotic, meaning it only works against bacteria. Vaginal thrush is a fungal infection and needs antifungal treatment. We offer treatments for thrush on our website.
How does clindamycin cream work?
Clindamycin is an antibiotic. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of bacteria. This treats the overgrowth of certain bacteria associated with BV. This in turn helps the body to restore the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina.
What kind of bacteria does clindamycin work against?
Clindamycin works against a number of bacteria that are associated with BV such as Gardnerella vaginalis and Bacteroides.
Is clindamycin cream used for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?
Dalacin cream is not suitable to treat STDs such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea.
How can I prevent BV from returning?

- Not using vaginal deodorants or washes
- Not washing your underwear in strong detergents
- Not smoking
- Having showers instead of baths
