What is Yasmin?

Yasmin is a popular and effective contraceptive pill. It contains two ingredients which help to prevent ovulation and make it harder for sperm to reach the uterus. These two ingredients are two different female hormones called drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. This type of contraception pill is called a ‘combination’ pill or a combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill.

With any medication, there are risks involved, and so you should have all your regular check-ups with your own GP each year, to ensure it is safe to continue taking Yasmin.

How does it work?

Yasmin contains two different female hormones called drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. This is called a ‘combination’ pill or a combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill.

This combination of hormones stops the body ovulating (releasing an egg) and reduces the likelihood of sperm reaching the uterus by thickening the mucus of the uterus. It also makes it harder for a fertilised egg to implant into the womb and be able to grow. These effects make Yasmin an effective contraceptive pill.

Dose

Yasmin is taken once daily, at around the same time each day. Yasmin is a 21-day pill pack, meaning one pill is taken every day for 21 days (starting on day 1 of your menstrual cycle), followed by a 7 day, pill-free break. Yasmin strips are each marked with the day of the week.

During the 7 day pill-free break you will likely have a withdrawal bleed similar to your menstrual periods. You are still protected during these 7 days and do not need to use other methods of contraception.

Start taking the next strip of Yasmin after the seven pill-free days – even if you are still bleeding. It is important to begin the new strip on time.

Missed Pill

If you are less than 12 hours late taking a tablet, you are still protected against pregnancy. Take the tablet as soon as you remember and then take the following tablets again at the usual time.

If you are more than 12 hours late taking a tablet, this counts as a missed pill and your protection against pregnancy may be reduced. If you have missed more than one pill, you are at greater risk of pregnancy.

The rules differ depending at what point of the strip you missed a pill. Page 14 of the patient information leaflet contains a table that explains this or you can see our missed pill guide.

FAQ

FAQ

What is Yasmin?

Yasmin contains two female hormones, ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. These are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. It is a combined oral contraceptive used for preventing pregnancy.

When do I take Yasmin?

Yasmin is best taken at the same time each day, one pill every day, for 21 days of your cycle. Yasmin ED comes with an additional 7 inactive pills, which can be taken to help keep track of your pill-free days.

How does Yasmin work in birth control?

Yasmin works by tricking the body into thinking an egg has been released, by keeping hormone levels high. This prevents an egg being released into the ovaries each month. The hormones also work by thickening the mucus lining of the womb, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through.

How long after taking Yasmin are you protected

If you start Yasmin on the first day (24 hours) of your period you are immediately protected against pregnancy. You may also begin on day 2-5 of the cycle, but then you must use extra protective measures (such as a condom) for the first 7 days.

Are Yasmin and Microgynon the same?

No, Yasmin and Microgynon contain different synthetic hormones. While they have the same action, you should not switch pills without a check-up and discussion with your GP.

What do I do if I miss a Yasmin pill?

If you are less than 12 hours late taking a tablet, you are still protected against pregnancy. Take the tablet as soon as you remember and then take the following tablets again at the usual time.

If you are more than 12 hours late taking a tablet, this counts as a missed pill and your protection against pregnancy may be reduced. If you have missed more than one pill, you are at greater risk of pregnancy.

The rules differ depending at what point of the strip you missed a pill. Page 14 of the patient information leaflet has a table that explains this or you can see our missed pill guide.

Can Yasmin make you gain weight?

One of the side effects of contraceptive pills is that there can be fluctuations of weight. This is listed as an uncommon side effect for the pill Yasmin. If you find your weight gain is difficult to control, you should speak to your GP about switching to a different birth control pill.
